Come closer and you’ll feel the hint of funk as well. This is a far cry from the cheap Californian merlots of the 1990s and the rustic Patagonian merlots that used to sell for a few bucks a bottle. The flavors are light at first, with a restrained mix of red berries and citrus notes, but rich prune arrives with some airing – and the finish is long enough to merit more contemplation. The tannins offer plenty of structure, and the finish is long but clean, with an unusual final note of green apple.
